Is Moderating Blog Comments Censorship? Is This Wrong?

iCal IconHey

As a blog owner I get a couple of comments a week and I have the chance to moderate them for spam and so on. But is moderating comments and rejecting them because they contain things that the owner doesn't like a poor choice for a blog owner. Most blogs are there for as a part of free speech many people see them as a great tool to get there word out. But does moderating comments go against this rule.

For example an article may be about the health of America (a big topic at this time) as the owner moderates the comments that are made he or she can remove the comments which oppose the article or the author, removing these would go against the free speech rule.

What I am trying to get at here is that people go on and on and on about free speech on the internet, but people do seem to go against this rule and remove some comments.

Now I now not all authors do this, but some of the smaller blogs have been doing this. Due to the apparent amount of "good" comments. Not every person on the internet must do this, just look at some of the comments on Digg.

The only reason I can see moderation as a useful tool is to remove spam comments but these are easy to weed out.

Just a thought.

Longest Words In The English Language

iCal iconHave you ever wondered what the longest words in the English dictionary are? I did to, so I went searching and found the longest words that are present. Some of these you should pop into a regular conversation, show how smart you are (or stupid)

In at 1185 letters it is:

Supposedly a Coat Protein, Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Dahlemense Strain molecule, it has 1185 with the combination of yl appearing 166 times. In fact each of the molecule bas stands is said with yl appearing after it. Slip that on einto a conversation and you will there forever.

With 85 letters it is

The place name for Hawkes bay in New Zealand although shortened to Taumata for ease of converstation.

In at 45 letters it is:

A factitious word alleged to mean 'a lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine silica dust usually found in volcanoes' also known as Black lung disease, not very nice to have or say on your medical form. (Also known as pneumoconiosis)

In at 39 (slowly getting shorter) is:

A surgical creation of a connection between the gall bladder and a hepatic duct and between the intestine and the gall bladder. Now you no which word to use use when describing that place to your doctor.

Both in at 37 is:

By the sounds of it they are both chemicals.

31 letters:

Again another chemical.

After this point, there are a lot of words with 30 letters, so there is not much point going into them. Although there are some notable mentions.

Both places in Wales with lots of letters, but since words in Welsh are not English, they don't count.

Not actually appearing in the English dictionary it cannot be counted as a word. Still very long though.

Firmly believed by some as the longest word in the dictionary it means : "The belief which opposes removing the tie between church and state."

Hopefully you are now more clued up for conversation where you have to use long words. If you believe there are any errors please leave a comment.

Whats Wrong With Blogger?

iCal iconI think blogger may have a problem.

Ill tell you why, because every time I post and hit publish, this screen shot appears.

Blogger errorThis may not be such a huge problem, but it clearly shows blogger may be experiencing a hiccup.

These types of problems appear in other places to. For example on the layout page.

Blogger layout errorNotice how there is no way to add a new page element, and the alignment is all out of place. Now this may be because I am using a Mac, but his has happened on other platforms.

Can A Blog Post Have To Many Labels

iCal Icon June 4thHey

I was wondering about it earlier but can a blog have to many labels to choose from when post. For example check out the image below to the amount of labels I can pick when writing about a post, and this grows every day.

The problems with this is that having to many labels is unnecessary. For example a post on wallpapers could come under:

  • Wallpapers
  • Design
  • Pictures
  • Computer
  • Cool
  • Download
  • Image
  • Widescreen
  • Monitor
So on and so forth.
Originally the idea behind labels was to categorize posts into general areas. This is so existing users can quickly find specific posts. The disadvantage of having so many is that it can be hard to find the exact label a post may have, as well as this later on in the blogs life there may be so many labels that the author misses a category. Problematic if users rely on labels to navigate.

But, there is some advantage of using so many labels. In particular to search engine optimization (SEO). If all downloads have the download label, when a search engine is crawling the site, it will pick up that a post is linked to downloads, reinforcing links and bonds to search engine criteria.

Of course it is up to the blog owner if a post contains a million labels or just two, but there are advantages and disadvantages of both.

How To Get Blog Ideas

iCal Red June 4th 2007You have a blog, but you don't have any ideas which you want to fill your blog with interesting and fulfilling posts to gain visitors and be an internet legend, what do you do? Read on.

One of the first steps is to have a purpose to write about, for example I have Great Design, for all things design. Adsense Hacks, for all things related to Adsense and finally a new and upcoming blog about Apple Mac Tips.

Once you have a clear defined purpose you need ideas to fill out the posts. Start with a pad of post- its and a pen. Have these in clear reach, when you working, walking, driving etc. These are used to jot down all the little thoughts that pop into your head. The must have place is by your bed. Many people forget what the idea they had when in bed, your shouldn't fall into this trap.

How to get Ideas?

What you need to do is day dream. If you have a blog which is about design, you should have plenty ideas about design. Write all the little tidbits down. Most of the time, when you have time to think a little more this idea will come into play.

Other ways of getting ideas to post is when visiting websites. Most of the time you will see a website which has any idea which you could use make better or comment on. Keep this in a separate folder, every couple of days re-visit them. Most of the time people get ideas, and post about that. Its a could way to pick up knowledge.

As I said in the beginning keep a piece of paper or post it handy. They always come in useful when you reviewing whats on them before you put them in the bin. That little word or sentence in the top corner which you wrote ages ago could be one that brings the visitors. Keeping note also helps.
If you are the modern user and have a Mac, stickies is another great option. Most of the time when dashboard is running it is going to be about something I am going to post the next day.

Stickies Dashboard, How to get ideasThe golden rule for this is to keep think and keep blogging, one idea will catch on and people will begin to visit your site.

iCal June 3rd 2007I no that this may be old or that you have seen it before, but do you no what $250 Million Dollars looks like, simply amazing.

Apparently this money was taken by the police from drug lords. Clearly they should have used a bank account rather than hiding it under the bed. Must have been a very big bed.

Can you Digg it? Song

After searching through my vast music collection I came across this song. I like Digg, and these people must have been on the beta release. New how good it was and wrote a song about it. How cool.

Can you Dig it?
By the Mock Turtles

The lyrics go something like this:

Can you dig it
Can you understand me now
I'll get through somehow
You won't ever get me down
Won't see me hanging around

Can you dig it, oh yeah
Can you dig it, oh yeah
Can you dig it, oh yeah
Can you dig it what I'm saying
One little kiss isn't anything
I won't be sad

Someone turned a light on

See how big and strong I've grown
I'm standing on my own

Can you dig it, oh yeah
Can you dig it, oh yeah
Can you dig it, oh yeah
Can you dig it what I'm saying
One little kiss isn't anything
You keep insisting on everything
I won't be sad

Someone turned a light on

Can you dig it, oh yeah
Can you dig it, oh yeah
Can you dig it, oh yeah
Can you dig it what I'm saying
One little kiss isn't anything
You keep insisting on everything
I won't be sad

Someone turned a light on

Can you dig it
Can you dig it
Can you dig it
Can you dig it

Do you reckon this was created for the infamous Digg.

You can download it here.

Quick Tip - Mac - Changing File Assosications

I'm new to Mac at the moment and learning all the time about the new operating system. The section will be given quick tips on speeding up your life. This feature will appear every now and again depending on what I find. This weak associations.

Change file associations (default opener)

Often times you might find that one or more files open with a undesirable program. Many people have come to me asking how exactly one goes about changing this. Here is the basic and easy way:

Find the program you want in the finder (or perhaps it's on the desktop). Ctrl+click the file so that the menu comes up, and click on "Get Info". In the window that comes up, go to the "Open With" section. Change the (default) to whichever program you'd like the file association to open with, and then click "Change All".Hope that helps. Peace Out.

The Real Reason The RIAA Sucks - Its Run By a Women

Every one has heard of the RIAA (Record Industry Association of America) knows that it is not the best organisation in tho world. All it seems to do is sue people for sharing music that they probably never owned or heard of. Well it may come as a shock to you but the organisation is run by a women.

The president of the RIAA is Hilary Rosen. This is more trouble than it worth. For example
Sir Patrick Moore said in this article, that "British TV standards are deteriorating because the BBC is "run by women"". Would the RIAA be different if it was run by a man. Would unnecessary lawsuits disappear and instead they would focus and getting music to users instead of tightening DRM measures and making it more and more restrictive. We would have to wonder.

Now I am all for women in power but I do think that they may not always bring the best views to the table. If you would like to share your views please leave a comment.

The 6 Types of Bloggers

The "new" craze on the Internet is blogging. I say craze because every one seem to be doing it, old people, young people, even babies. From my experience there are many times of bloggers in the world.

1) The Spam Blogger

This blogger is not really a blogger. He or she sets up a website with the sole interest in putting up adverts and non sensical adverts, all for the better of generating a little profit at the expense of annoying many people. This people should not be called bloggers. There blogs are known as splogs.

2) The Post Hundreds Of Articles A Day Blogger

This type of blogger no one cares about. He or she posts hundreds of times a day with nonsense relating to what they watched 5 minutes ago on TV. Now only likes your blog, go away.

3) The One Post Blogger

This blogger sets up a blog an only posts to it once. Clearly they thought blogging was to hard and gave up with out trying.

4) The Serious Blogger

These bloggers are some of the worst on the interwebs. Post only about really serious topics that only 0.0001% of the world cares about and gets really upset when people don't like their blog.

5) The True Blogger

This person was born to blog. He or she regularly updates with good honest content which is fits for every ones eyes.

6) The "Hey I Got A Blog" Blogger

This blogger is usually on par with MySpace. His or her blog has to contain every colour is the CSS colour chart. Usually mixes with the number 2 or 3 on this list.

Well folks that's all I can think of right now. Have fun and enjoy the rest of your day.

8 Blogger Improvements

I use Blogger all the time and I think its great. But there are some improvements that could make it a lot better.

1) Spell Checking in Title

This should be an improvement because there are so many time that I have posted and there has been a small spelling mistake and as a result I have to go back and change it. A small line of code would make so much difference in a post if it would spell check it.

2) Autosave

This feature way already be implemented but it would have a piece of mind if there was an indication that the post was saved. It is very frustrating when your computer crashes and you lose a past that you have been working on for the last half hour.

3) AutoFormat

This improvement would automatically change letters such as "i" into a capital. As well as changing the first letter in a sentence to a capital.

4) Responsiveness

The service may be great but there are sometimes when Blogger is just plain slow. For example adding an image can take for ever. If Blogger was sped up a bit this would be a great improvement.

5) More Template Functionality

This improvement would enable advance tweaking to the CSS and template without the need for looking through the template. Probably for advance users but it would help improve layouts.

6) More Widgets

This is more of a content feature. But there would be more widgets to add to your template.

7) Adsense Widget

This widget would be a lot better if it interfaced into your Adsense account more. For example channels , saved colour scheme. This improvement would make the widget better.

8) Able to Place Widgets Between Posts

Instead of having to place code manually in the template there should be an extra area to place widgets, this would be especially made for the Adsense widget.

Why Don't Bittorrent Trackers Use IP Blocklist

As I looked at all the lawsuits that seemed to be brought against people for sharing information on Bittorrent and other P2P networks. I was wondering why Bittorrent trackers don't use IP blocking.

For example, Peer Guardian offers a program that blocks IP addresses from connecting to your computer and vice versa. As well as this I also know that Bittorrent trackers have the ability to block IP's for various reasons (Eg, Bad Seeding, Bad Upload ratio etc). How come then these trackers don't implement the Peer Guardian block list into the tracker. This would stop people IP addresses being snooped in alleged file sharing scandals. As the snooper could not connect to the tracker network. This could solve the problem.

Of course this would just create a round robin of different IP to add to the tracker that these companies use, as well as this it would probably put tremendous strain on the tracker as it would have to manage every IP address. There would probably be a limit as well.

End note: I do not support illegal file sharing, this was just an idea that popped into my head.

Improvements to Google Adsense

We all know that Google Adsense is the bees knees, but there is always room for improvement. I've been using Adsense for not very long and would like to suggest some ideas to make Google Adsense better than it already is.

1) Reports That Tell You How Many Invalid Clicks.

Although this might not be the biggest of problems for most people it is just nice to know. For example there are days when i've had clicks and not earned that much. How many were invalid? I don't know.

2) A Report That Tells You How Much You Earned per 1000 Page Views

Some advertisers on the network also/only pay every time there has been 1000 page views of that particular advert on your site. This improvement would make it slight better in working out how much you have earned from these advertisements.

3) An Auto Rotate of Colour Palettes

This improvement would automatically cycle the Adsense adverts between different colour palettes. This could be done every time a visitor refreshes your page or every hour, day etc. This would save time manually changing the colours.
I do no that you could program that in a Javascript of different Adsense code layouts to auto rotate, but this could be done with out the need to learn how to do that.

4) Auto Rotate of Ad units

Very similar to the previous improvement but Google Adsense auto rotates between adverts. For example button and large box. Saves you doing it manually.

5) Automatic Notification of New Sites

This is more of a warning than any thing else. All it would do is tell you in either Adsense or by an E-mail that it has picked your adverts on another site. Save you being caught with questionable content that wasn't yours.

6) The Saving of Preset Designs

Similar to the palette feature but this time saves your colours and Ad unit styles. Quick and easy access, rather than going through the wizard.

7) Graphs

In the same style of the new Google Analytics but used in Adsense, the simple reason that reports have all this data but no way to graph it. You could do it in Excel or similar but that involves a different process. As well as this a little interface boost would always look good.

If you would like to try Adsense there is a link on the left. That will take you directly to the sign up page.

Are you a "Wilfer"

Are you a "Wilfer"?

A wilf stands for "What was I looking for?" which basically means the process of going online and getting distracted. For example you go online, log in, and get distracted vistiting different links on different pages totally unrelated to the content you were looking for. Most of the time people end up on Wikipedia.
A Scottish poll (YouGov) claims that more than 60% of the Scottish admit to browsing aimlessly online. That's a lot of time and productivity wasted.

So the warning is stay focused. Or you could end up being sucked into the time wasting vortex or the Internet.
