Becoming Your Own SEO

The definition of SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimization". This guide will tell you how to get the best of you website with out paying the hundreds of dollars for a "professional" to do it for you.

The first step: Getting you site laid out correctly.

Your site has to be well optimized to be easily crawled. The first step is to make sure that each page has a relevant title. This gives search engines and idea of what your page is about.

Make sure that each page has a description in the header. The description aids a search engine into what your site is about, as well as offering information about the page if it can't pickup its own description.

Don't use frames. Frames were good 5 -10 years ago but know have fallen by the wayside. Search engines have trouble crawling you content and most users (including myself) don't like the way website perform when frames are used.

Have Good Content. You have the best site in the world but on every page there is only a few lines, no good to search engines. People like rich picture and text pages, having one line per page doesn't give Google, Yahoo or any other search engines much to go on. Develop content.

Don't duplicate other sites content. Duplicating other peoples content doesn't bode well for search engine rankings. They no that its duplicate and will most certainly put it against when it comes to listing you site.

Keywords. You want you site say to appear for blogs. Make sure that "blog" frequently appears on your site. Having "blog" appear on your site will increase the chance of your site being linked to the word blog. Don't spam the listings though, you could be penalized.

Use the h1 and h2 tags to highlight your titles and other words on your page. Search engines will pick up on the importance of the words within the tags, improving the the chance of that phrase being picked up.

Don't have dead links. Dead links are trouble. Having dead links annoys both users and search engines on you site. There could be the most amazing web page at the end of the link but if no no one can get there how can it be indexed.

Step two: Getting links

To get indexed you have to have a link to you website. The best places to get links are on high page rank sites, but this is always never possible. So you have to go alternate routes and build up links to your site.

Manual submission. This method involves go to each of the search engines and manually adding your site to the listings, is a long way to do it but search engines will begin to find your site.

Social submission. This involves go to places like Digg, Reddit, etc and adding your site and getting visitors this way. One golden rule is making sure you don't spam these sites, spamming doesn't help. This is another way to get your site onto the listings.

Keep updating your content. The more web pages you put on the site with new original content. Search robots will comeback more and more often, indexing your site with your content.

The final rule

The final rule of Search Engine Optimization is wait. It takes time for people to find your site on search engines. What to do in the mean time, add more to your website and have fun.
